Dr. Melda Gjokaj

Trusted Veterinarian with a Passion for Lifelong Pet Care

Dr. Melda Gjokaj is the founder and lead veterinarian at Vets on the Hudson. With over 20 years of experience in the veterinary field, she brings a calm, thoughtful approach and clinical expertise to every patient she treats. Since opening her clinic in Edgewater, she has become a trusted provider for pet owners throughout the local and surrounding communities.

She earned her veterinary degree from Istanbul University, completed the rigorous ECFVG certification process, and interned at the renowned Garden State Veterinary Specialists in Eatontown, NJ. Her early career was shaped by years in high-volume emergency hospitals, where she handled complex, urgent cases with confidence and compassion.

For three years, she served as medical director at a high caseload hospital in Hoboken. When the practice was sold to a corporate group, Dr. Gjokaj made the decision to step away from corporate medicine and recommit to personalized, patient-first care—leading her to open a local practice where veterinary decisions would always center on what’s best for the pet.

Today at Vets on the Hudson, Dr. Gjokaj focuses on providing thoughtful, individualized care with an emphasis on urgent care and advanced dentistry. She believes in building lasting relationships with her patients and the people who love them.

Dr. Gjokaj lives in Edgewater with her husband, Besim, their daughter Lumi, and their cat, Vera. Outside the clinic, she enjoys hiking, photography, and staying connected to the community she calls home.

Leyla

Head CSR

Born and raised in Jersey City, Leyla has been a cornerstone in the veterinary field for over six years, beginning her journey right after high school. Her love for animals drew her into this line of work, and she has now risen to the role of Head Customer Service Representative, where her dedication and passion truly shine. With her natural charisma and warm-hearted approach, Leyla is the friendly face you’ll see when you walk into our office. Her genuine enthusiasm and professionalism create a welcoming environment for clients and their pets alike. Outside of work, she treasures her time with family and enjoys cozy evenings watching Disney movies with her son. Leyla’s commitment to caring for animals and her vibrant personality make her an invaluable part of the Vets on the Hudson team!

Lucia

Lead Veterinary Technician

A Rutgers New Brunswick graduate with a unique blend of expertise in Animal Science and Art History, Lucia brings over a decade of experience in the pet industry to our team. With a background as a skilled dog trainer, she began her journey as a veterinary technician in 2019 and has been captivated by the field ever since. Driven by a deep passion for animals, Lucia has honed her technical skills to provide the best care possible. When she’s not at the hospital, she’s out on adventures with her loyal dog, Rocket, or designing new creations through her love of sewing. Her warmth and enthusiasm are unmistakable, and you’ll notice it right away—especially since she always greets your pet first! Lucia’s energy and dedication make her an integral part of the Vets on the Hudson team and a trusted friend to every animal who visits us.

Jennifer

Veterinary Technician

Jennifer Hayes brings seven years of veterinary technician experience to Vets on the Hudson, where her compassion and expertise make her an integral part of the team. She takes pride in providing exceptional care to every pet while building meaningful connections with their owners. Outside of work, Jennifer spends time with her two beloved dogs, Hardy, a 10-year-old Morkie, and Nyla, a 5-year-old Pittie. A fan of Disney movies and anime, she brings warmth and dedication to everything she does, making her a valued member of the Vets on the Hudson family.

Gia

Veterinary Assistant/Scribe

Tattoo artist, professional piercer, and Dr. Gjokaj’s right hand as our vet scribe and tech assistant, Gia Guzman brings creativity, skill, and a dash of wit to everything she does. She ensures our patient records are sharp and detailed, supporting Dr. Gjokaj and the team in delivering seamless care. Outside of work, Gia is a proud cat mom to Titus and Mochi, a horseback riding enthusiast, and a dedicated gamer. Fun, fearless, and full of character, Gia is an essential part of the Vets on the Hudson team!

Melissa

Reception/Veterinary Assistant

With a background in sports medicine and a lifelong love for animals, Melissa decided to follow her dreams and become a veterinary technician. She is currently advancing her skills through the Penn Foster Veterinary Technician program and has been a valued member of our team since we first opened two years ago. Melissa’s positive spirit and enthusiasm are contagious—you’ll always see her smiling, whether she’s assisting at the front desk or in the treatment area. Outside of work, she enjoys exploring the outdoors, hiking, and taking her friends’ dogs on fun walks. Her unique skills and warm presence make her a vital part of the Vets on the Hudson team and a friendly face you’ll be glad to see!
